Whitewood
Saskatchewan, "the Crossroads Community", is the hometown of Hitmen
team captain, Brett Carson. Whitewood is a town of approximately
1000 people, and is located in eastern Saskatchewan at the
intersection of two major highways, giving it the nickname of “the
Crossroads Community” (click
here for a map). The nearest major city to Whitewood is Regina,
and the town is about “9 hours from Calgary” by car. According to
Brett the climate in Whitewood is “extreme(ly) hot in the summer
(and) extreme(ly) cold in the winter”, so if you like extreme
weather, Whitewood is the place for you!
Brett
grew up in Whitewood, and the thing he misses the most when he’s
away from home is his family, although most of his extended family
does not live there. Growing up in Whitewood Brett and the other
kids spent their time “play(ing) hockey, golf (and) sports in
general”. The
Fred
J. Hack Park is the place to go
for
recreation in Whitewood, and is home to a variety of activities
including golf, camping, swimming, baseball, tennis and even beach volleyball! You could also
head down to the Whitewood
Community Arena for some curling or hockey. Brett’s favourite thing
to do when he’s home is “golf”. Whitewood is home to the Whitewood
Golf and Country Club, and there are several other golf courses
nearby.
Given
the kind of extreme weather experienced in Whitewood Brett’s
‘tongue-in-cheek’ advice to potential tourists is to “leave.”
Despite all that, if I packed my bags and headed out to Whitewood
there are many attractions I would love to see! There are
plenty of interesting things to see and do in the town, especially if you are
interested in the history of Western Canada. You could take a look
at some of the town’s many historic murals or visit the “Flag
Gardens”, a large rock garden and flag display dedicated to the many
nations that founded the
community of Whitewood. If you like museums, you could check out
the Whitewood Historical Museum or Chopping’s Museum, which is
located in a beautiful 17 room period home, and has been recognized
as a tourist attraction by
National Geographic. Or you could simply take a self-guided tour,
and enjoy the sights, shops,
and
friendly atmosphere of this
eastern Saskatchewan town.
