The
hometown of Calgary Hitmen forward
Keegan Dansereau is located “6
hours” east of Calgary in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (click
here for a map). Saskatoon is the largest city in
Saskatchewan with a population of approximately 200,000 people.
Saskatoon is one of the
sunniest cities in Canada, with four distinct seasons and a climate
that Keegan describes as “average”. The thing that Keegan misses
most about his hometown when he’s away playing for the Hitmen is his
“family and friends.” However, although Keegan grew up in
Saskatoon, most of his extended family does not live in the city.
As
a kid growing up in Saskatoon some of Keegan’s favourite pastimes
included “play(ing) hockey (and) softball.” When he’s home Keegan
says that he also enjoys spending his time “hang(ing)
out with (his) friends and play(ing) hockey on the outdoor rink near
(his) house.” There are, of course, many other fun and interesting
things to see and do in Saskatoon. Some of which include "the
bridges, the river, the University, (and) the Meewasin trail”, which
Keegan suggests are must- see attractions for tourists visiting
Saskatoon. The city of Saskatoon is located on the banks of the
beautiful South Saskatchewan River, which is traversed by seven
bridges within the city limits. These bridges are a unique feature
of the city, and because of this Saskatoon is also known as “The
City of Bridges.” The Meewasin trail is another way to enjoy the
South Saskatchewan River Valley in Saskatoon. Meewasin is the Cree
word for “beautiful”, and the trail extends through 21km of
landscaped parks and natural areas in the scenic river valley.
The
University of Saskatchewan is yet another important landmark in the
city of Saskatoon. Founded in 1907 the University of Saskatchewan
features striking stone buildings and collegiate gothic
architecture, making it one of the most beautiful campuses in
Canada. The University is also home to numerous cultural
attractions including the Diefenbaker Canada Centre, the Museum of
Antiquities, the Gordon Snelgrove Gallery, the Kenderdine Art
Gallery, and the Museum of Natural Sciences.
In addition to the
attractions mentioned above, the city of Saskatoon is also home to
numerous festivals and events. Some of these include the Saskatoon
Exhibition, which is Saskatchewan’s largest annual event, the Canada
Remembers International Air Show, the Saskatoon Fall Fair, The
Saskatchewan Jazz Festival, and the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan
Festival. Saskatoon is also home to one of the Calgary Hitmen’s WHL
rivals, the Saskatoon Blades (against whom the Hitmen are a perfect
4-0 so far this season!).
Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan is a beautiful city with plenty of charming outdoor
attractions and fun activities, and it is a great place to call your
hometown.
