Curtis Kelner is
one of two Hitmen players from the United States. His hometown is
the city of Peoria, Arizona which is considered part of the greater
Phoenix area, being located just northwest of Phoenix and only “30
minutes away” from downtown. The city is situated “right in the
middle of Arizona, in the desert” and is a “3 hour flight” from
Calgary” (click here for a map). Peoria is the ninth largest city
in Arizona, with a population of over 100,000 people. However,
Curtis did not grow up in Peoria; he was born in Garden Grove,
California and later moved to Prescott, Arizona, before eventually
settling in his current hometown of Peoria. As such, most of
Curtis’s extended family does not live in his hometown. When Curtis
is away playing for the Hitmen the thing he misses the most about
his hometown is “the weather!” Curtis describes the climate in
Peoria as “very hot (and) dry” with “summers (that) are 40-50°
Celsius” and “winters (that) are 5-15° Celsius”. However, Curtis
would also like to point out that “Arizona is not only a hot
desert. They have mountains, snow, and ski resorts too.”
There are many fun
things to see and do in Peoria and Phoenix. Kids looking for a good
time can “go to the lake, ride quads or dirt bikes, and (go)
golfing.” Curtis’s favourite things to do when he’s back in his
hometown are “going to the lake, and hanging out by the University”
and he suggests that tourists visiting Peoria should be sure to
visit these places as well. One of the main attractions in
Peoria is Lake Pleasant, a great water recreation area, where you
can enjoy sailing, fishing, camping and more. The West Campus of
the Arizona State University is located in northwest Phoenix, and is
another great attraction. Curtis also suggests that tourists
visiting his hometown should “go golfing” as the area boasts a
number of enjoyable and challenging golf courses.
The city of Peoria
offers a variety of other great attractions. The city is home to
the Challenger Space Centre where visitors can fly simulated space
missions, and participate in many other activities. If you’re a
baseball fan, Peoria is a great place to visit, as the Peoria Sports
Complex is the spring training home of both the Seattle Mariners and
the San Diego Padres. Other fun things to do in Peoria include
skating or hockey at the Desert Schools Coyotes Centre, flight
lessons at the Turf Soaring School, or taking in a play at the
Arizona Broadway Theatre.
Overall, the city
of Peoria, Arizona is a fun and interesting place with a variety of
things to see and do, and plenty of ways to enjoy the nice hot
weather. Peoria is a great city, and a wonderful place to call your
hometown.
