The
hometown of Calgary Hitmen assistant captain Dustin Kohn is located
in enemy territory. Dustin grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, which is
located “3 hours north (of Calgary) on Highway 2” (click
here for a map) The climate in Edmonton can be described as
“very similar to Calgary, minus the Chinooks.” Some of Dustin’s
extended family are also from Edmonton, but “others are scattered
mainly across Canada.” When he’s away from home Dustin says that he
misses his “family and friends”, but he likes living in Calgary and
says that “Calgary’s a great city, (a) close second to Edmonton.”
When he was
younger, Dustin and the other kids he grew up with spent their free
time playing “hide and seek and (having) sleepovers.” These days
when he’s at home in Edmonton Dustin’s favourite thing to do is t
o
“hang out with friends.” There are, however, a great variety of
other things to see and do while in the city. Dustin suggests that
a tourist visiting Edmonton should visit “West Edmonton Mall (and)
the River Valley.” With over 800 stores and 110 restaurants West
Edmonton Mall is the largest shopping and entertainment centre in
the world. The mall also features numerous other attractions
including Galaxy Land – the world’s largest indoor amusement park,
World Water Park, glow in the dark mini-golf, the Ice Palace, which
features an NHL sized ice rink, and much more.
Edmonton’s River Valley is another must see attraction of the city. This
scenic area features a series of parks with many
bicycle, hiking
and cross-country ski trails and is also home to many special events
throughout the year. Edmonton is known as “Canada’s Festival City”
and with weekly festivals throughout the summer and festivals every
month in the winter the city certainly lives up to the name. The
city’s festivals are extremely diverse, and include the Fringe
Theatre Festival, the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Klondike Days,
the Dragon Boat Festival and the Heritage Festival just to name a
few. Edmonton also features numerous art galleries, museums, and
historic attractions, including The Edmonton Art Gallery, the Royal
Alberta Museum, Fort Edmonton Park and the Old Strathcona Historic
Area, all of which contribute to the city’s thriving arts and
cultural scene.
In addition to all
the festivals Edmonton is also a great sports city, and is home to
many professional sports teams including the Edmonton Oilers
(National Hockey League), the Edmonton Eskimos (Canadian Football
League) and the Edmonton Rush
(National
Lacrosse League). Overall Edmonton is an exciting and vibrant city
that features many fun things to see and do.
