Craig Lineker
is one of two Calgary Hitmen players that play for their hometown
team. Craig, along with team-mate
Jeff Schultz, grew up in Calgary,
Alberta. However, Craig was not born in Calgary; he “moved here
from Edmonton when (he) was young” and most of his extended family
still “live in and around Edmonton.” Calgary, as most Hitmen fans probably know, is a large city located in Southern Alberta on the
banks of the Bow and Elbow Rivers. Calgary is also known for its
unpredictable weather and when asked about the climate of his
hometown Craig replied “It’s Calgary, the climate is different
everyday!” When he’s away from Calgary, the things Craig misses the
most about his hometown are “(his) own bed and mom’s cooking.”
There are lots of
things for kids to do in Calgary, and Craig says that when he was
growing up here some common pastimes included playing “street hockey
and (going) to the lake.” These days Craig’s favourite thing to do
in his hometown is “play hockey!” which he gets to do a lot since
joining the Hitmen earlier this season! Craig also recommends that
any tourists visiting Calgary should definitely be sure to “come see
a Hitmen game!”
After seeing the
Hitmen play, there are many other exciting things to see and do in
the city. Calgary was the host city of the 1988 Winter Olympics,
much of which took place at Canada Olympic Park. The park is a
great place to go for skiing, snowboarding and bobsledding within
the city limits, and many athletes use the facilities for training.
The park also features the Olympic Hall of Fame and Museum as a
legacy of the games. If you enjoy exploring nature, Calgary also
boasts numerous parks and nature reserves including Fish Creek Park, Nosehill Park, Bowness Park, and the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary which
is home to hundreds of species of plants and birds.
Some other must-see
attractions in the city include Eau Claire market, Kensington and
Chinatown, all of which both offer a variety of unique shops and
restaurants. Calgary’s Chinatown also features the Calgary Chinese
Cultural Centre, which is another fascinating attraction. Other
things to see in Calgary include the Calgary Zoo (which currently
has a new baby hippopotamus on display!) the Calgary Stampede, the
Science Centre, Heritage Park and the Calgary Tower.
Calgary is an
exciting city with many great attractions and fun things to see and
do. It is also a friendly and welcoming city and a great place to
call your hometown.
