Edmonton
Alberta is the hometown of Calgary Hitmen defenseman Shaden Moore.
Shaden grew up in Edmonton which is located “in Alberta, about three
hours away from
Calgary”
(click
here for a map).
Edmonton is the capital city of Alberta, and is the sixth largest
city in Canada with a population of approximately one million
people. The city is situated on the banks of the scenic North
Saskatchewan River, and the river valley is home to a number of
great parks and trails. When asked about the climate in his
hometown Shaden replied that it is “similar to Calgary, but Calgary
has
a little bit nicer weather.”
There
are lots of fun things to do for kids growing up in Edmonton, and
Shaden says that when he was younger he liked to “play sports.” When
Shaden is away from home playing hockey the things he misses the
most about his hometown are his “friends and family”, so when he
does return to Edmonton his favourite thing to do is to “go to the
mall (and) hang out with friends and familiy.” Shaden suggests that
a
tourist visiting Edmonton should also be sure to check out “West
Edmonton Mall.” Covering 48 city blocks the mall is the largest
shopping complex in the world, and is Alberta’s largest tourist
attraction. In addition to over 800 stores and 100 restaurants, West
Edmonton Mall is also home to Galaxy Land, a huge indoor amusement
park, World Water Park, glow in the dark mini-golf, the Ice Palace,
which features an NHL sized ice rink, and the Fantasyland Hotel.
For
a quieter shopping experience you could head down to the Old
Strathcona Historical Area, which is home to a number of unique
shops, outdoor cafes and a Farmer’s Market. The city is also known
for its great cultural scene and features a number of theatres,
museums and art galleries. Some of these include the Art Gallery of
Alberta, which houses over 5000 works of art, The Citadel Theatre,
and the Royal Alberta Museum.
Some other great attractions in
Edmonton include the Valley Zoo, Fort Edmonton Park, the Alberta
Legislature Building, and the University of Alberta.
Edmonton is also a great sports city and is known as the “City
of Champions”. The city is home to numerous professional sports
teams including the Edmonton Oilers
(NHL),
The Edmonton Eskimos (CFL) and the Edmonton Rush (NLL).
Overall, Edmonton
is a dynamic city with a vibrant cultural community and a number of
fun and interesting attractions. The city is a wonderful place to
visit and a great place to call your hometown.
