Jeff
Schultz didn’t have to go very far when he started playing for the
Calgary Hitmen. Jeff grew up right here in Calgary, and most of his
extended family lives in the city as well. Calgary is located in
southern Alberta (click
here for a map), and is a dynamic city of nearly one million
people (and growing fast!). In addition to the Hitmen, Calgary is
home to several other major sports teams including the Flames (National
Hockey League),
the Stampeders (Canadian Football League) and the Roughnecks (National
Lacrosse League). Calgarians love their
sports! And Jeff is no exception; growing up in
Calgary, Jeff, like many other Canadian kids, enjoyed spending his
free time playing
hockey.
When asked about his favourite thing to do in Calgary when he’s
not
playing hockey, Jeff said that he likes to
golf. Calgary and its surrounding areas have many great
golf courses where Jeff can practice this pastime. Although, with
Calgary’s
unpredictable weather, they may not be open for that much
of the year! Jeff describes the climate in Calgary as “cold”, and it
certainly can be in the winter! You never know if a snowstorm or a
Chinook is going to hit, but at least it’s not monotonous!
Calgary is a big
city, and there are many events and attractions for visitors to
see. The most famous events in the city is the Calgary Exhibition
and Stampede, known as the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth”. The
Stampede offers many fun shows and activities, and promotes
Calgary’s western heritage. Other must-see attractions in Calgary
include The Calgary Tower, the Calgary Zoo, The Glenbow Museum, The
Devonian Gardens, Fort Calgary, Heritage Park and many more!
If
you like the outdoors, be sure to take advantage of Calgary's many
parks, trails and bike paths. Calgary's Nose Hill park is the
largest municipal park in Canada! Or, better yet, you could head out
to the mountains. One
of Calgary’s best features is it’s proximity to the Rocky Mountains,
which are only a quick one hour drive away. The Rockies provide the
city’s visitors and
residents the opportunity to enjoy breathtaking
wilderness and outdoor recreation. Jeff suggests that tourists
visiting the Calgary area take a trip out to Banff, where they can
enjoy some great shopping, the hot springs, and a trip up the side
of a mountain in the Banff Gondola.
Known for its
friendly atmosphere and western hospitality, Calgary is a great
place to visit, and an even greater place to live and grow up.
